Fischer Farm 4-H earns distinction at Illinois State and DuPage County Fairs

Club Open House to take place September 7 at Fischer Farm

Bensenville, Ill. (August 15, 2024)— The Bensenville Park District’s Fischer Farm 4-H Club members received numerous honors at the recent DuPage County Fair (July 25-28 in Wheaton). Four club members went on to earn awards at the Illinois State Fair (Aug. 8-18 in Springfield).

Isaac DeFord was the grand champion at the state fair as the delegate for DuPage County in the woodworking category. Delegate John Nelson won reserve champion for his cookies. Kari Wier won an Inspire Award for the dress she made as the delegate for the clothing 3 category. Additionally, Anna Wier showed rabbits at the state fair and won “best Holland lop senior doe” and “best of breed.”

“As a first-year 4-H Club, this is truly remarkable,” says Fischer Farm Manager Christine Shiel. “We are so proud of our club and the work by its members! We look forward to sharing more about their accomplishments at our September 7 open house.”

Eight Fischer Farm club members were selected to represent the county as state fair delegates and alternates. Several projects exceeding 4-H standards were chosen

as delegates to show their project and represent DuPage County at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield. The following were chosen as delegates and alternates:

  • Fischer Farm 4-H Club: Passport to the World-Club (Alternate)
  • Isaac DeFord: Woodworking (Delegate)
  • Catherine Kansa: 2D Paper (Alternate)
  • Elizabeth Kansa: Shopping in Style (Delegate)
  • Emily Molina: Animal Science (2nd Alternate)
  • John Nelson: Cooking (Delegate); Woodworking (Alternate)
  • Anna Wier: Fiber (Delegate); Food Decorating (Delegate); Heritage Arts (Delegate); Clothing (Alternate); Shopping in Style (Alternate)
  • Kari Wier: Clothing (Delegate); Leather (Alternate); Wood (Alternate)

Of the 89 trophies in 18 categories of youth 4-H projects recognized, Fischer Farm 4-H Club members took home 17 grand champion trophies. In the creative and cultural arts area, Kari Wier took home top honors in the Clothing 3 category, and Elizabeth Kansa earned the top award in the Shopping in Style category. Kari Wier also earned top honors in the dog show, winning Dog Obedience Novice 1 and Dog Rally Novice grand champion trophies. John Nelson earned grand champion recognition in cooking, part of the Healthy Living and Nutrition category. Fischer Farm swept the Swine Show with Swine Champion PB Barrows Jacquelyn Ferreri and Swine Champion Jr Showmanship Brandon Wier. At the Poultry Show, Kari Wier was awarded for her poultry champion hen as well as for poultry champion showmanship. Anna Wier was recognized as champion for poultry champion junior showmanship. Three of the five Sheep Show grand champions came from Fischer Farm. Sheep champion market lamb/ewe or wether honors went to Kari Wier, who also won for sheep showmanship. Anna Wier won for sheep junior showmanship. Isaac DeFord won grand champion honors for woodworking in the STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) category.

Fischer 4-H Club member Anna Wier also took home three top honors in the Visual Arts category for fiber, food decorating and heritage arts. Kari, Anna and Brandon Wier were recognized as the 2024 fair book artists.  Kari Wier also took home a plaque for winning the 4-H Electricity Award
