Meet the park district’s animals of the month this summer

Bensenville, Ill.— The Bensenville Park District announces the continuation of its popular Animal of the Month Meet and Greet program, which offers a unique opportunity for children and animal enthusiasts to get up close and personal with fascinating creatures.

The meet and greets will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on select Tuesdays in June, July and August. Sessions will take place in the Nature Nook, located in the lobby of the Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood Street. The upcoming schedule includes sessions featuring anoles, hermit crabs and turtles.

The first Animal of the Month Meet and Greet took place on May 9 and featured corn snakes, captivating participants with their slithering presence and fascinating behaviors.

Anoles are small, agile lizards known for their ability to change color. During the June 13 session, participants will have the opportunity to observe these remarkable reptiles up close and learn about their unique characteristics, habitats, and behavior.

On July 11, the spotlight will be on hermit crabs. These fascinating crustaceans have a soft abdomen that they protect by occupying discarded shells. Attendees will learn about their intriguing behaviors, habitat requirements, and the importance of providing proper care for these captivating creatures.

The meet and greet session on August 8 will feature painted and red-eared slider turtles. Participants will discover interesting facts about these aquatic reptiles, including their distinctive markings, feeding habits, and their adaptations for survival in their natural environment.

“We are excited to invite children and young animal enthusiasts to meet some incredible creatures through our Animal of the Month program,” says Recreation Supervisor Breana Aponte. “These interactive sessions provide a unique opportunity to learn about different animal species, fostering a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.”

The Animal of the Month Meet and Greet program offers attendees the chance to observe, touch and learn about various animals in a safe and supervised environment. Knowledgeable staff members will be present to provide interesting facts, answer questions and facilitate a memorable experience for all participants.
